Your Guide To Solo Travel
Are you scared to travel solo? I get it.
Embarking on a solo travel journey can be incredibly scary but it can also be so empowering. Many people think solo travel means booking a flight to Tokyo tomorrow, but for me, it started with embracing my own company and taking small steps. You have to crawl before you walk and walk before you run.
Solo travel has seen a significant rise, with more people seeking the freedom and personal development it offers. For instance, solo travel searches increased by 761.15% post-pandemic, reflecting a growing interest in this mode of travel (Solo Traveler).
In this episode, I'll share my 5-Phase Guide on how I got comfortable with solo traveling, starting with internal work.
Phase 0: The Self-Discovery Phase
Before we dive into the phases of solo travel, let's talk about Phase 0: the Self-Discovery Phase. Solo travel isn't just about booking a flight and exploring new places; it begins with a lot of internal work. Solo travel is not for the weak—it takes strength, confidence, and a clear vision of the life you want to live.
The first step in solo travel is understanding what kind of life you want and whether you're okay living that life without waiting for others. Are you ready to stop waiting on people to see a movie, try a new restaurant, or travel to a new destination? Many of us wait and wait, but life doesn't wait for us. Family and friends may have their own journeys, and waiting on them can lead to a life of delays and missed experiences.
The first destination in your solo travel journey is self-discovery. Understand who you are, be confident in your decisions, and realize that you already have everything you need to create the life you want. Don't wait on others to live your dreams. Many people live and die without truly experiencing the life they desire.
Start by defining what you want out of life. What do your mornings look like? How do you spend your evenings? Who are you with? Visualize and manifest the life you want to create. The first and most important destination on this journey is self-discovery.
Here are a few books that have helped me on my Self-Discovery.
Now, let’s break down how to get comfortable with solo traveling.
Phase 1: Enjoying Your Own Company Locally
Begin by treating yourself to date nights or date days in your own city. This is a great way to get comfortable with your own company.
Tips:
Spa Date: Treat yourself to a relaxing spa day. Enjoy the serenity and pamper yourself.
Dining Out: Start by going out for lunch. If dining alone at a table feels awkward, consider sitting at the bar. It’s a more casual setting and allows you to engage with the bartender and other guests.
Hotel Bars: Visit a five-star luxury hotel bar for a drink or lunch. It’s a safe and enjoyable way to experience luxury and practice being comfortable alone.
Phase 2: Staycations
Once you’re comfortable with local outings, consider a staycation. Spend one or two nights at a local hotel to get used to the idea of being away from home but still within your comfort zone.
Resource:
ResortPass: An app that lets you access luxury hotels in your city for a fraction of the price. You can use their pools, spas, and other facilities for a day or stay overnight if you prefer.
Phase 3: Domestic Travel
The next step is traveling domestically. Choose destinations that are not too far from home but offer a different environment and new experiences.
Favorite Destinations:
Arizona: Known for its wellness resorts and beautiful landscapes. Perfect for a relaxing getaway.
Chicago: My favorite U.S. city with amazing dining, culture, and attractions, especially in the summer.
New York: Vibrant, bustling, and full of endless possibilities. Great for solo travelers looking to explore.
Phase 4: International Travel
Finally, once you’re comfortable with the previous phases, it’s time to consider international travel. This can be daunting but incredibly rewarding.
Top International Destinations:
Thailand: Known for its friendly locals, beautiful beaches, and rich culture. Great for solo travelers.
Japan: Safe, clean, and full of unique experiences. A fantastic destination for solo adventurers.
Portugal: Affordable, beautiful, and full of history. Lisbon and Porto are particularly solo-traveler friendly.
Tips for Solo Traveling Beginners
Plan Ahead: Research your destination and plan your itinerary to ensure you know what to expect.
Stay Connected: Always share your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member.
Pack Smart: Bring essentials like a portable charger, a good book, and a travel safety kit.
Blend In: Dress modestly and respect local customs and traditions.
Be Open: Solo travel is about discovering new places and meeting new people. Be open to new experiences and enjoy your journey.
I hope these phases help you begin your solo travel adventures! Remember, whether you start with a spa day in your city or a trip to a far-off land, solo travel is about enjoying your own company and growing through new experiences.
