Rediscover Yourself: A Journey Worth Taking

So, do you ever feel like you just need a break—mentally, emotionally, maybe even physically?

Studies have shown that taking regular breaks can actually reduce stress and boost productivity by up to 40%—so it’s not just a feeling; it’s a real need! Sometimes all we need is a change of vibe, a new scene, and it’s like hitting refresh on our lives.

We’re exploring how stepping outside our daily routines can open doors to self-discovery and growth. Learn how to start your own path to a deeper connection with yourself through one of my favorite ways… travel!

Breakfast at Londolozi in Sabi Sands, South Africa

Have you ever done something so powerful it changed the way you saw everything—even yourself?

Or maybe you’ve had an experience that shifted things in you, and you realized later it was bigger than just you. That’s what travel has done for me.

When I took a solo trip to South Africa in September 2023, I thought I was hitting the reset button on my life but I was actually hitting the ‘transformation button’.

I needed to breathe again after my divorce, fertility treatments, and chronic stress. I wanted space to start healing, to rediscover myself.

Looking back, these last few years have been so uncomfortable but also so transformative. Being on untouched African land, surrounded by a nature that felt ancient and anointed, I realized this wasn’t just a trip.

Some trips are turning points. A moment that will echo for generations after you.

I was feet away from some of the most beautiful creations, like this pride of lions and cubs.

I started to see that once I stopped holding back and really lived my life, it wasn’t just for me. It was a love and strength I wanted to pass down. I want my future kids and grandkids to look back and say, “Dang, look at Grandma in Africa—so brave and confident.”

The start of my healing and self-discovery journey. I was so happy this day. At that moment, it had been a while since I smiled.

And I want them to know they can do the same, that healing and self-love are things they deserve, and that seeing the world is one of the most beautiful ways to do it.

Are you planning to visit South Africa one day?

Travel v. Vacation: Are They The Same?

The short answer is No. It all comes down to your mental approach

Vacation: This is an escape with a focus on temporary relief from daily life. Think cocktails on the beach while taking a nap.

Traveling: This is a journey of self-discovery, cultural understanding, or growth, where you are more immersed in the destination, often seeing it as an opportunity to gain new perspectives.

Cabo San Lucas is one of my favorite getaway destinations.

How To Experience Self-Discovery Through Travel

Breaking free from routine and exploring new places can reveal more about who you are than you might expect. Here’s why stepping outside of your everyday routine is so powerful: it gives you a fresh perspective, lets you connect with the real you with no distractions, and creates experiences that make up parts of who you are.

Think of yourself as a blend of all the moments and places you collect in you life. Both good and bad. Each experience adds a little more to who you’re becoming.

What do you think? Do you feel like each experience shapes you, too? It’s incredible how meaningful these moments can be.

The Power of Intentional Self-Discovery

Taking intentional time to reflect is like giving yourself the gift of clarity and perspective, something you can really only get when you step back and listen to yourself. Here are a few lessons that can come from creating this kind of space:

  1. Learn To Trust Yourself With Discipline :

When you show up for yourself—whether that means finally booking the adventure you’ve been talking about, going to that first gym session, or just taking a quiet moment to reflect—it’s more than just an activity. It’s honoring a commitment to yourself. Every time you follow through, you’re telling yourself that you’re worth it that your growth matters.

Discipline is a powerful form of self-love.

It’s so easy to say, “I’m going to take that trip,” or “I’ll start something new for myself.” “I’m going to go to the gym this week.”

But how often do we actually follow through?

When I tell myself, I want to do something. I do it! Going to Africa was something I promised myself many years ago. And I don’t break my promises to myself.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned on this journey is that real self-discovery doesn’t happen by chance—it’s intentional. It’s about making a promise to yourself and keeping it, even when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient. Because in the end,

Self-discovery isn’t just about finding out who you are; It’s also about learning to trust yourself.

2. Embracing New Perspectives:

A new setting—or a meaningful conversation—can open your eyes to parts of yourself you usually overlook. Sometimes, a fresh view can reveal the best parts of you. Experiencing a new culture or environment can help you see life through a different lens, uncovering strengths, values, or passions you didn’t even realize were there. It’s amazing how stepping out of the familiar can remind you of who you are—and who you’re capable of becoming.

I met so many beautiful people in South Africa and have so many friends all over the world.

3. Personal Growth as a Lifelong Journey:

Self-discovery isn’t something we check off a list—it’s an ongoing journey that constantly connects us to our purpose and values. Each step, whether it feels like progress or a setback, plays a part in shaping who we are. The challenging moments, especially, become some of our greatest teachers, revealing strengths, resilience, and truths we might not have seen otherwise.

Growth isn’t always easy, but it’s in those hard-won lessons that we get closer to understanding who we’re meant to be. As we grow, we redefine our goals, adjust our path, and deepen our connection to what matters most.

Embracing self-discovery as a lifelong process means accepting that we’re always evolving,

and that’s where the beauty of the journey lies—knowing we’re always moving toward a truer, more authentic version of ourselves.
