How to Clean Makeup Brushes Like a Pro – 3 Mistakes You’re Probably Making
Have you ever looked at your makeup brushes and thought, “I should probably clean these…” and then immediately moved on with your day?
Trust me, I get it. But here’s the thing—dirty brushes aren’t just messing up your makeup, they’re holding onto oil, bacteria, and product buildup that can lead to breakouts and skin irritation.
But I know you already know this. Lol. We just have to make it a habit and stick to a routine!
Cleaning your brushes isn’t just about hygiene—it’s an act of self-care. Every Sunday, I take time to slow down, put on some music, and reset my tools and my mind. It’s a small ritual, but it makes a big difference.
If you’ve ever wondered how professional makeup artists clean their brushes, beauty blenders, and personal kits, I’ve got you!
3 Common Mistakes When Cleaning Makeup Brushes (And How to Fix Them!)
Mistake #1: Not Cleaning Brushes Often Enough
How often do you really clean your brushes? Be honest. If it’s been a minute, don’t worry—you’re not alone.
Fix it: I recommend cleaning your personal makeup brushes once a week. Pick a specific day (I do Sundays!) and make it a gratitude ritual. Play some music, sip on your favorite drink, and enjoy the process.
Mistake #2: Letting Water Get Into the Brush Handle
One of the biggest culprits for ruined brushes? Water seeping into the barrel, loosening the glue, and causing shedding.
Fix it: Always hold your brushes at a downward angle when washing and drying. This prevents water from getting inside the handle and keeps your brushes in top shape longer.
Mistake #3: Using the Wrong Water Temperature
Hot water might feel like it’s doing a deeper clean, but it actually weakens the glue and fibers holding your brush together. On the flip side, cold water won’t break down product residue effectively.
Fix it: Use lukewarm water to wash and cool water for the final rinse. Nothing’s worse than drying your brushes only to realize there’s still soap in the bristles—ugh, the worst.
