Why You Shouldn't Visit The Bahamas
Listen or Read Time: 13 minutes
We win some, and we lose some. Spoiler alert: I didn't completely enjoy my recent trip to the Bahamas.
A topic like this can be very controversial, but it's important to always be honest with you all. I don't just tell you things I recommend; I also share mistakes I've made. It's crucial to understand what my expectations were and recognize that a lot of information was available to me that I should have researched better before hopping on the cheapest flight to the Caribbean. This is nothing against the lovely country and island of the Bahamas. It was beautiful, and there's so much I want to share that was great about it. However, this trip did not meet my expectations, and I should have done a better job researching what the island could offer before I went.
How I Chose the Bahamas - What Is Google Explore
After a busy work season, I needed a personal reset. Rest and relaxation are so important to me, and I wanted to find an affordable way to achieve that. I love using a tool called Google Explore, which allows you to choose a destination based on price, distance, and region. I wanted a quick trip from Washington, DC – less than three hours – with non-stop airfare and within a $500 round-trip ticket budget. That's how I landed in the Bahamas.
The Disappointments
Everything Is Overpriced
I paid $75 for six lemon pepper wings and four bottles of water, with each bottle costing $12. This level of inflation, especially for necessities, felt unjustified. The exchange rate of 1:1 with the US dollar meant no financial benefit, making every purchase feel like I was being overcharged.
Tourist-Heavy and Commercialized
Nassau is extremely tourist-centric, which I found overwhelming. The area felt more like a playground for visitors rather than an authentic Caribbean experience. The pervasive presence of tourists made it challenging to find a peaceful spot to relax and soak in the surroundings.
Lack of Value for Money
While I don't mind spending money on luxury accommodations, I expect a corresponding value. In Nassau, the price did not match the experience. Many things are imported, which drives up costs, but the quality and uniqueness didn't justify these prices.
All-Inclusive Resorts Aren't My Style
Most resorts cater to an all-inclusive experience, which isn't my preference. I enjoy à la carte dining and the freedom to explore different culinary options rather than being confined to buffets and fixed menus. I was looking for an isolated resort where I could find peace and relaxation. Instead, I encountered a bustling environment filled with beach parties, casinos, and family activities.
Challenges with Food and Dining
While the Bahamas offers fine dining experiences, they were unavailable at my property. To access them, I would have had to visit more densely populated areas, which was not conducive to the relaxed environment I desired. I went grocery shopping, spending $60 per private driver for one hour and $60 on breakfast items. Often, I ordered room service or used the local food delivery app, Kraven. A local mentioned that Bahamian food can be heavy, and many items did not meet my diet restrictions, which include several dietary limitations.

The positives
Despite these challenges, some wonderful aspects of the trip deserve mentioning.
Beautiful Photography
I always hire a local photographer when I travel. During my trip, I hired Leo Creary, who was phenomenal. He captured beautiful pictures of the scenery and landscape, allowing me to cherish the stunning beauty of the Bahamas even more.
Fantastic Staff and Stunning Accommodations
The staff at the Goldwynn were exceptional, and my one-bedroom suite was phenomenal. The terrace was larger than my first apartment, and the room featured stunning decor, a private kitchen, a private terrace, a private living room, and a spa-like bathroom.
Crystal Clear Waters
The beaches were stunning, with crystal clear, turquoise waters that were incredibly inviting.
Friendly People and Culture
The locals were warm and welcoming, adding a lovely cultural touch to the experience.
Final Thoughts
The Bahamas, particularly Nassau, might be perfect for families looking for an activity-packed vacation with water parks, casinos, and beach parties. However, it fell short for a solo traveler like me who seeks value for money, luxury experiences, and tranquility. I won't be revisiting the Bahamas anytime soon, as other destinations offer a better balance of cost and experience, aligning more with my travel preferences.
In the future, if I do return to the Bahamas, I would ensure staying at a resort with a great menu selection and restaurant options that justify the cost. However, I would not recommend the Bahamas for solo travelers.
I hope this honest account helps anyone considering a trip to the Bahamas to weigh their options carefully. Ensuring that your chosen destination aligns with your travel goals and expectations is essential.
Safe travels!
